The future of heritage-designated Stuart Wood elementary took another step toward clarity on Thursday, Oct. 2, as the city and university agreed to explore ways to use the facility on St. Paul Street.

The Kamloops-Thompson school district plans to close the school in 2015, moving its students and staff to another school on McGill Road, now home to the elementary grades of Beattie School of the Arts. Those students are slated to join the secondary component of Beattie in the John Peterson campus Ninth Avenue, adjacent to South Kamloops secondary.

A memorandum signed by the city and university, announced to Thompson Rivers University staff through an email, is the start of a “ process to give TRU and the city an opportunity to examine the possibilities for the site.”

The city owns the property and the school district has been using it.

A committee made up of Uli Scheck, provost and vice-president academic, and Matt Milovick, vice-president administration and finance, will work with the deans from the business school, arts faculty, and other departments at the university to look into potential academic uses.

Consultations will also involve staff, students and faculty.

The email from TRU president Alan Shaver said “there are no preconceived expectations as to the outcome of the exploration; both partners recognize the historical significance of the building and its impact on the downtown core.”
