He claims he slipped in pee.

Now he wants the province to pay a fee.

A criminal with a lengthy record who last month was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail is suing the province of B.C., claiming he slipped and fell in a puddle of urine in his Kamloops jail cell in July.

Shane Jeurissen has filed a notice of claim in Kamloops provincial court, seeking $25,000, plus court fees, from the province.

Jeurissen claims he was in Cell 4 of Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre’s (KRCC) segregation unit on July 24 when two other inmates threw a container of urine into his cell.

The notice of claim states Jeurissen, 43, “slipped on the urine inside the cell and fell to the ground,” suffering injuries to his back and knee.

Jeurissen claims a corrections officer then made him clean up the urine with no protective equipment.

According to Jeurissen, KRCC staff were negligent in allowing the two prisoners to approach his cell and failed to “maintain the claimant’s [Jeurissen's] health and safety.”

In September, Jeurissen was ordered to spend another three-and-a-half years behind bars after the Crown failed in its bid to have him deemed a dangerous offender — a tag that could have brought with it an indefinite jail term.

That sentence came after two violent domestic assaults — the latest a 2012 incident in Barriere.

Jeurissen was labelled a long-term offender, meaning he will spend a decade under close supervision in the community once he’s released from jail.

According to his notice of claim, Jeurissen is now an inmate at the Pacific Institution and Regional Treatment Centre in Abbotsford, a multi-level security facility adjacent to Matsqui Institution.

Pacific Institution has a psychiatric care unit, a health centre and a rehabilitation unit.
