Late-game heroics from Haley Irwin and Rebecca Johnston lifted Canada to a 3-2 victory over the U.S. in round-robin play at the Four Nations Cup on Wednesday, Nov. 5., in Kamloops.
The Americans dominated the first 15 minutes of the third period and looked comfortable carrying a 2-1 lead until Irwin, Canada’s captain, slid a backhander past U.S. goaltender Alex Rigsby.
Just 46 seconds later, Johnston tipped in a point shot from Courtney Birchard, notching a power-play goal and sending the Interior Savings Centre crowd of about 4,500 into a frenzy.
The marker, Johnston’s second of the night, stood up as the game-winner.
Shiann Darkangelo and Dani Cameranesi scored for the U.S. in support of Rigsby, who made 18 saves in a losing effort.
Genevieve Lacasse stopped 30 shots and posted the win between the pipes for Canada.
