Kamloops Mounties have issued a cryptic press release about an investigation they’ve launched regarding “the alleged exchange of inappropriate materials” between school-aged youth.
In the release, RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said it’s too early to “categorize the nature” of the investigation or comment on its details.
“Releasing information or conducting a parallel media investigation at this point could be damaging to the entire judicial process,” she said.
Investigators are working closely with Kamloops-Thompson school district officials, Bush said, noting the safety of students is a priority.
“When we became aware of the information, we acted swiftly and have numerous investigative and support resources allocated to this file,” she said.
It is known Mounties have been at a Kamloops high school this week, interviewing students of both genders and seizing cellphones from some boys.
It is believed the boys had been exchanging photos via their phones.
Bush urged parents to remain engaged with the social-media activities of their children.
Last week, administrators at a Kamloops elementary school raised concerns about potential issues surrounding the use of Snapchat — a social-media app through which users exchange self-deleting photos and videos — by students.
Bush said there will be a press conference at the school-district office on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
