The South Kamloops Titans repeated as champions in the 2014 Fulton Cup City Championship, defeating the NorKam Saints 60-55 in the senior girls’ gold-medal final on Friday, Dec. 19.
South Kamloops defeated the Sa-Hali Sabres 57-30 in the 2013 tournament.
Friday’s game was never really in doubt for the Titans as the South Kamloops club led from start to finish.
The defending champions were spurred on by a 17-point effort from Grade 12 Elizabeth Andersen.
“It’s amazing,” Andersen said. The 2014 Fulton Cup title was her fourth in four years at the tournament.
“To be able to wrap it up with my senior year and lead my team, it’s a great experience.”
The Saints were led by a 14-point effort from Cassie Morris.
In the junior girls’ final, the Titans defeated the Westsyde Whundas 50-33, successfully defending their championship as well.
Award winners
Following the game, all-stars and scholarship nominees were announced.
Josh Bosher of Westsyde was named the MVP of the senior boys’ tournament and took home a $250 Fulton and Company scholarship. Tournament all-stars included Tanner Farber (Valleyview Vikings), Evan Cave (Saints), Keegan Marchand (Sabres), Scott Barry (Whundas) and Reid Sellars (Titans).
Ben MacDonald of South Kamloops was named the MVP of the junior boys’ tournament. Devin Halcrow (Saints), Nick Sarai (Titans), Scott Lemphers (Whundas), Tyler Whitney (Sabres) and Mitch Mathieson (Saints) were named all-stars.
Sadie MacDonald of South Kamloops was named the MVP in the senior girls tournament, capturing the $250 Fulton and Company scholarship. Maia Wallace (Sabres), Meghan Grinberg (Whundas), Reiko Ohama (Saints), Tamika Talio (Titans) and Kayla Grant (Saints) were named all-stars.
Lauren Wakely of South Kamloops was named the MVP of the junior girls’ tournament. Gracie Campbell (Saints), Kara Brink (Sabres), Katherine Wakely (Titans), Lindsay Hanghofer (Whundas) and Ryallie Jorgensen (Whundas) received all-star nods.
Each senior team also named one player to win a $250 Fulton and Company scholarship.
In the senior boys’ tournament, Dayton Schadlich (Whundas), Povven Bilkhu (St. Ann’s Crusaders), Tyler Wightman (Vikings), Sellars (Titans), Jo Kang (Saints) and Marchand (Sabres) took home the cash awards.
In the women’s event, Wallace (Sabres), Madison Egli (Saints), Andersen (Titans), Hannah Stainton (Whundas), Hannah Bergman (Vikings) and Gabrielle Mayhew (Crusaders) were selected by their respective teams.
Though the junior teams didn’t receive scholarships, each team won an entry to the annual Red Devils summer basketball camp.
Jacob Branch (Sabres), Kodi Taylor (Whundas), Ripley Martin (Titans), Quin Adam (Crusaders), Ben Larson (Vikings) and Coalbey Dumaresy (Saints) won the boys entries.
On the junior girls’ side of the ball, Kayla Rosette (Sabres), Alyssa de la Gorgendiere (Whundas), Anola Bruneau (Saints), Paetyn Freeze (Titans), Emily Konkin (Vikings) and Olivia Loehr (Crusaders) were selected to attend the camp.
