After retiring from Thompson Rivers University — for the second time — Roger Barnsley made an unexpected discovery.

He really likes to be working, but without the 12-hour days.

Retirement in Parksville has given Barnsley and wife Paula that new reality. They are both busy on boards and with organizations, but they don’t have to deal with the daily grind of heading to the office.

In fact, Barnsley said, he joined a golf club this year and has found himself out on the links a lot.

The best part?

His golf buddies don’t keep score.

While Kamloops was home for the Barnsleys for several years as he headed up University College of the Cariboo as its president and saw it through the transition to TRU, Barnsley said he’s not in the River City much these days.

Instead, he and Paula are more likely to be somewhere down in the Amazon, on the Galapagos Islands, touring through Machu Picchu — or in Toronto visiting grandchildren.

Barnsley said Parksville is a great new home for him and his wife because he has three other grandchildren nearby and his dad lived there for years, making it a “comfortable fit.”

He keeps busy as co-chair of the B.C. Council on Admissions and Transfers, of which he’s been a member for six years.

The council handles all post-secondary articulations in the province and is recognized worldwide for the quality of work it does, Barnsley said.

He also joined the Vancouver Island Health Authority board this year and is a member of its health-quality committee and is finishing his fifth year on the board of the B.C. Automobile Association.

“It’s a balanced life and we’re really enjoying it,” Barnsley said.
