Big, little events coming in 2015

The Big Little Science Centre will be closed until after New Year’s Day, but it will have an electric reopening the following day.

On Friday, Jan. 2, the centre reopens with the return of its static electricity show at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. It will also be shown the following day, Saturday, Jan. 3.

The show includes an appearance by the van de Graaf Generator, which has the ability to make hair fly.

The following week, the magnetism show returns on Jan. 10, with the air pressure show set for Jan. 17.

Then, on Jan. 23, the centre will kick off Unplug and Play Week, with a free family literacy night to be held at Sahali Centre Mall.

It runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will include music, art, dance, crafts, science, food and a free book for every child. It is open to kids of all ages.

Science Story Times will be held on Jan. 24. It will feature stories connected to nature and science and will be read by guest readers throughout the day, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Jan. 31 will feature simple science activities for everyone. The hands-on session will explore basic science ideas and experiments from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Family Literacy Day will also continue at the Henry Grube Education Centre from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The centre is located at 655 Holt St. The aforementioned activities run with the exploration room, which features around 140 exhibits and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kids can join robotics club

The Big Little Science Centre will bring back its Robotics Club in 2015.

The club runs after school for kid builders of all experience levels.

Members may work from Lego designs or free build, depending on experience and interest.

It also includes interactive challenges.

There are Wednesday and Friday sessions, with six classes as follows:

• The first sessions run Jan. 7 to Feb. 11. on Wednesdays and Jan. 9 to Feb. 13 on Fridays.

• The second sessions run Feb. 25 to March 11 and April 8 to April 22 on Wednesdays and Feb. 27 to March 13 and April 10 to April 24 on Fridays.

• The final sessions run April 29 to June 3 on Wednesdays and May 1 to June 5 on Fridays.

Each session costs $60 per child, with a $5 discount for members, and is open to kids ages 10 and older.
