The police officer who was shot during a traffic stop in Kamloops last month will remain in a Vancouver hospital for at least a few more weeks.
RCMP Cpl. Jean-Rene Michaud was shot in the early-morning hours of Dec. 3 after pulling a vehicle over on a Batchelor Heights street.
The shooting sparked an intense manhunt that lasted more than 12 hours, eventually leading to the arrest of 36-year-old Ken Knutson.
Michaud underwent multiple rounds of surgery at Royal Inland Hospital in the weeks following the shooting. On Dec. 22, he was airlifted to a Lower Mainland hospital for additional surgeries after his condition took a turn for the worse.
Kamloops’ top cop said Michaud, 41, is now back on the mend.
“He remains in Vancouver and he is scheduled to remain there for a couple more weeks,” RCMP Supt. Brad Mueller told KTW.
“But, he’s making some progress.”
Knutson, a convicted killer with a lengthy criminal history, is facing a raft of serious charges related to the shooting of Michaud — including attempted murder.
His next appearance in Kamloops provincial court is scheduled to take place tomorrow (Jan. 15).
