Quick action by first responders in Kamloops on Wednesday saved a city man from possibly harming himself.

Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Joe Morrissey said Mounties received a report at 8 p.m. of an emotionally disturbed person threatening suicide on the North Shore.

After an argument with his father, Morrissey said, the 48 year old man walked away from his home. He was intoxicated and said he wanted to jump into the South Thompson River.

Morrissey said myriad teams were pressed into action — RCMP officers, a police-service dog, the RCMP/Interior Health Authority Car 40 (manned by a Mountie and nurse and dedicated to mental-health calls), a police helicopter and Kamloops firefighters.

The distraught man was tracked by the RCMP’s dog to a location near the float-plane dock on Aviation Way, at Kamloops Airport.

Morrissey said the man was taken, without incident, to Royal Inland Hospital for treatment.
