Kamloops council has awarded the Columbia Street widening contract — and drivers should expect Fourth Avenue at Columbia Street to be closed for at least a month as the project begins.

The contract was awarded on Tuesday to BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. for $2.675 million. The company was the lowest compliant bidder of three tenders received by the City.

The multi-month project was initially estimated at $3.9 million, but has since been revised to $4.8 million.

Construction may begin as soon as Tuesday after the Victoria Day long weekend.

The project will include the addition of left-turn lanes at Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth avenues and the closure left turns at Second Avenue.

Utility relocations, signal and lighting improvements, pedestrian upgrades and centre medians and landscaping work is also involved.

The project’s start will include the relocation of a major BC Hydro switch box, which will result in the closure of Fourth Avenue at Columbia Street for up to one month.  The work will require trenching across Fourth Avenue at two locations — Fourth  Avenue at Columbia Street and just south of the alleyway (between Columbia Street and Nicola Street) that crosses Fourth Avenue.

The work will also entail trenching across Columbia Street.

On Columbia Street, two lanes will be kept open — one in each direction.

During the closure of Fourth Avenue, transit buses that access Columbia Street from Fourth Avenue will be rerouted.

The city will use social media, road signage, radio and print ads, the city’s website and other means to inform the public of delays and lane closures.
