The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce opened the nomination period for the 2015 Business Excellence Awards on Wednesday with the announcement of a new award category — employer of the year.

“We’ve been noticing some employers and how they go above and beyond,”  executive director Deb McClelland said.

“We’d like them to be recognized.”

The awards, now in their 29th year, had a record 468 nominations in 2014 and 440 attendees at the sold-out fall gala.

McClelland said the Chamber hopes to keep up the momentum this year and see even more nominations come in.

“We learn so much about Kamloops businesses through this process,” she said, adding there are many businesses in town that fly under the radar.

“We’d like them to be nominated, too.”

Berwick on the Park accepted the Service Provider Award (11+ staff) for the third time last year.

General manager Bev Graham said the retirement residence has been a Chamber member for about 12 of its 13 years in Kamloops.

“There is definitely a lot of exposure that comes with being a recipient,” she said.

“Having this award has given us an edge.”

Nominations can be made online at kamloopschamber.ca, in person at the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, 615 Victoria St., and at any of the five TD Canada Trust locations in the city.

Nominations close on June 30 and finalists will be announced on Sept. 9.

This year’s Business Excellence Awards Gala will be held on Oct. 24.

Anyone can make a nomination and any for-profit, non-government-owned business or individual can be nominated.

Nominees must have been in business for a minimum of one year.

Organizations, businesses or individuals may not nominate themselves for any award and award winners may not be nominated in the same category for three years following their win.

They can, however,  be nominated and win in other categories.

Sun Peaks businesses can also be nominated.
