Editor:

Thank you to KTW reporter Cam Fortems for his May 1 article on wood waste (‘Up in smoke’).

I am pleased to see the discussion around wood waste in our area and province starting again.

In 2008, our Unifor Local 10-b (CEP Local 10-b) moved forward with a wood waste information campaign to bring the wasting of our forest resources to the attention of the province and the public.

This campaign included a rally in front of then-MP Betty Hinton’s office and meetings with then-MLA Kevin Krueger. We posted photos of piles of usable wood fibre. The length of the logs were anywhere from 40 to 80 feet and between 8 and 24 inches at the base, all piled and ready for the fall slash burn.

But, this was not slash waste. It was clearly usable fibre being purposely wasted.

Burning of usable wood fibre continues today. This past weekend, I witnessed evidence of this in the Roche Lake area. on the border of the provincial park boundary line (see photo to the right).

We have to find a better way of dealing with the wasting of our forest resources. We have to find better ways of giving access to this usable fibre.

The practice of allowing usable wood fibre to go up in smoke has to stop.
