A former Liberal minister of finance will speak at Thompson Rivers University today before attending a Liberal fundraiser tonight.
Ralph Goodale, a senior Liberal MP and cabinet minister in the Paul Martin Liberal government, will speak at TRU’s Irving K. Barber Centre at 4 p.m. in a free lecture that is open to the public.
Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Liberal candidate Steve Powrie said the visit is a boost to his campaign and will give voters a chance to see the Saskatchewan MP and Liberal house leader, one of Canada’s most veteran parliamentarians who served as finance minister from 2003 to 2006.
One of the topics discussed is expected to be the Liberal pledge to reform Canada’s democracy by measures including more free votes for parliamentarians, transparency on Senate and MP spending and a commitment to reform the electoral system, including studying measures that include mandatory voting and preferential ballots.
Powrie said Goodale’s visit will provide a kickstart to his summer campaign of doorknocking.
The elementary teacher who also instructs students at Thompson Rivers University will campaign hard now that the school year is over.
The federal election is set for Oct. 19.
“The bottom line is a lot of people are done with the present government, but are kicking tires where they’ll go,” Powrie said.
Powrie is challenging New Democratic Party candidate Bill Sindhu and Conservative MP Cathy McLeod for the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo seat.
