Norovirus is back in town — and has led to another restaurant having to do a complete clean of the building after 14 people came down with the virus after eating there.
The Interior Health Authority confirmed it received complaints on May 4 and lab tests confirmed presence of the virus, which can cause an upset stomach, vomiting or diarrhea.
Other symptoms include nausea, cramping, chills and fever.
The illness begins suddenly and can remain for one to three days.
Joyce Michaud, an IHA environmental health officer, did not identify the restaurant in an email to KTW, but noted health inspectors visited it after receiving the first complaints and the owners co-operated, cleaning the premises to prevent further spread of the virus.
“These symptoms are unfortunate for business owners and serve a good reminder of how easy illness can spread,” Michaud wrote.
“If you are ill with norovirus, it is always recommended to stay home until the symptoms have subsided for a minimum of 48 hours.”
Michaud stressed the need for ongoing hand-washing, not only for those with the virus, but for the general public.
Her email said the IHA did not consider the incident to be an ongoing concern.
